Volunteer with the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Program

With the help of more than 32,000 highly trained volunteers, the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program provides free tax help to millions of low- and moderate-income people — with special attention to those age 60 and older. As our program continues to grow, we need more and more dedicated volunteers to join our team.

As a Tax-Aide volunteer counselor, you will receive 40 hours of intensive tax training before you help taxpayers in your community complete their federal forms, counsel them online, help them file their returns electronically, and more.

Many of our volunteers say that helping taxpayers through Tax-Aide is one of the most rewarding activities they have ever done.

Tax-Aide offers a range of meaningful leadership and tax counseling opportunities such as:

  • Tax Counselor: Counselors help individuals prepare their tax returns according to guidelines established by the IRS and the AARP Foundation. Training is provided.
  • Local Coordinator: Local Coordinators implement the Tax-Aide program in one or more geographic locations in their community. They recruit, appoint, ensure training, supervise, and evaluate Tax Counselors.
  • Technology Coordinator: Technology Coordinators plans, implement, maintain, and evaluate automated systems for tax service, administrative procedures, and volunteer training.
  • Communications Coordinator: Communications Coordinators plans, implement and maintain program promotions, and volunteer recruitment throughout the local region.
  • District Coordinator: District Coordinators implement Tax-Aide program plans and monitor all activities in one geographic district within a state.

If you’re interested in helping others in your community receive all the tax benefits they deserve, apply to volunteer with the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program.

If you are specifically interested in a leadership (not a Tax Counselor) position, please fill out the Leadership Position Application.

The AARP Foundation offers caring people many other volunteer opportunities to help people in need throughout the United States. Visit our website to learn more about these important opportunties to give back to your community.

The AARP Volunteers Help Others

Experts estimate that nearly 4 million eligible low-income older people are not getting the government benefits they deserve -- benefits that could help them defray the cost of prescription drugs, health care, utilities, and other basics. The AARP Foundation helps seniors get the Public Benefits they deserve.
